  • Our students come to us from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and unique family circumstances. We find strength in this diversity, and work continually to fuse the talents and gifts of each individual student with our common beliefs to produce well-rounded graduates for the future of our community.

    Of our 24,829 students in the Aiken County Public School District, 2614 are English learners. Thirty-seven languages are spoken by students in Aiken County Public Schools. These students represent people and communities from all over the globe. Whether students arrive in greater numbers speaking Spanish (2,231), or in smaller numbers speaking Mandarin (30 students), Gujarati (24), Arabic (21 students), or French (16 students), each of them deserves our commitment to provide the very best education possible.

    Through ESOL instruction, students develop proficiency in four key areas – Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. This effort is proven over time through annual ACCESS state assessments. The utilization of five progression levels – Entering, Emerging, Developing, Expanding and Bridging – serve as improvement benchmarks for educators and students. Once an English learner is able to display proficiency on the ACCESS assessment with a score of 4.4 overall and competency in all four language domains of 4.0 they are transitioned into the monitoring stage of ESOL.

  • The goals of the Aiken County Public School District’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program are:

    • to provide equal educational opportunities to Multilingual Learners (MLs) who have a primary or home language other than English,
    • to increase student achievement among MLs, and
    • to develop and support successful instructional models at the classroom and building level.
